Itinerary

Introduction

Nepal is dominated by the world's most majestic mountains, including Mount Everest. Despite its tiny size (147,181 square kilometres), the spectacular Himalayan peaks cover 80 percent of the country's territory. Nepal is divided into three geographical regions, each spanning the country from east to west. The Terai, the southernmost strip of land, is bounded to the north by Himalayan foothills and to the south by the Ganges River. Originally covered in tropical vegetation, the region has been almost entirely converted to agricultural agriculture. The Terai is now Nepal's breadbasket, with agriculture covering it.The Mahabharat Chain, a chain of mountains reaching modest altitudes of 2,000-3,000 metres, forms the centre region of Nepal. Farming has grown in importance in the area, with terraced farms producing rice, maize and wheat. Nepal's capital and other historic cities are located in the Kathmandu Valley, a stretch of green in the midst of the Mahabbarat. It is both the capital and the largest city. Dharan, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Lalitpur (Patan), and Bhaktapur are also important cities. Birendranagar, Chitwan, Siddhartanagar (Bhairahawa), Birganj, Butwal, Janakpur, Nepalganj, Hetauda, Damak, Dhangadhi, and Mahendranagar are some of the other major towns.

The square is known as the Capital City's social, religious, and urban centre point. Until the 19th century, the Palace Complex served as the royal Nepalese palace and is now the scene of key festivities such as the coronation of the Nepalese monarch. The castle is embellished with intricately carved wooden windows and panels. It is home to the King Tribhuwan Memorial Museum as well as the Mahendra Museum.

Swoyambhunath: Swoyambhu literally translates to 'Self-Existent One.' Swoyambhunath is thought to have been founded about 2,500 years ago. According to an inscription dated 460 A.D., King Manadeva oversaw the construction. Swoyambhunath had grown into an important Buddhist study centre by the thirteenth century.

Swoyambhu's birth is said to mark the beginning of Kathmandu Valley's history. The most important image of the Sakyamuni Buddha in Nepal is placed in a monastery near the stupa. Hidden behind the peak lies a shrine dedicated to Manjusri of Saraswati, the goddess of learning. Statues and shrines to Buddhist and Hindu deities can be seen throughout the stupa complex.

Its notable architectural antique masterpieces set it apart from other cities. Patan Durbar Square is a dense collection of temples and the most spectacular display of Nepalese Newari architecture. The former Royal Palace complex, a World Heritage Site, is the focal point of Patan's religious and social life, as well as a museum with a collection of bronze statues and religious objects.
