Introduction

WILDLIFE TOUR: Safari in Sri Lanka on this one-of-a-kind wildlife tour that visits five of the island's most magnificent national parks: Wilapattu, Wasgamuwa, Gal Oya, Udawalawe, and Yala. In nine days, look for elephant herds, Sri Lankan sloth bears, and elusive leopards, as well as visit Dambulla's spectacular cave temple and the Veddhas.

Day 1:

Colombo

Negombo - Colombo. Hello and welcome to Sri Lanka! When you arrive at Colombo International Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to our starting hotel in Negombo. After you've checked in, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy. Meet your guide and the rest of the group for the tour briefing this evening.

Day 2:

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu - Negombo. After breakfast, we take a scenic drive along Sri Lanka's coast to Wilpattu National Park. Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, comprising 1085 square kilometres and stretching inland towards the historic city of Anuradhapura. Wilpattu's lakes and dense forest are home to a diverse range of flora and animals, including sloth bears, spotted deer, wild pigs, crocodiles, and leopards – Sri Lanka's top feline predator. This afternoon, we embark on our first game drive by vehicle in search of animals. This evening, we eat a delicious BBQ dinner at the camp, which is on the southern limit of Wilpattu National Park, on the shore of a lake surrounded by bush forest.

Day 3:

Dambulla

Wasgamuwa - Wilpattu. After breakfast, we drive for Wasgamuwa, stopping en route to see the Dambulla Rock Temple, one of Sri Lanka's most stunning cave temples. This magnificent network of five caves houses over 150 pictures of Buddha, including a 14-metre-tall statue carved out of cave rock. We proceed to Wasgamuwa, where we will check into our accommodation before going on an afternoon wildlife drive in Wasgamuwa National Park. Wasgamuwa's evergreen forest, with its towering trees, is home to vast herds of elephants. We may also see wild boar, buffalo, purple faced langur monkeys, spotted deer, and crocodiles lazing in the sun on our game drive. Not to mention the 143 bird species.

Day 4:

Visit the Veddhas

Gal Oya - Wasgamuwa. Today we journey to Gal Oya, stopping in Mahiyanganaya to visit the forest-dwelling Veddhas - Sri Lanka's indigenous people. We continue to our lodge in Gal Oya National Park, where we will spend the remainder of the day at our leisure.

Day 5:

Gal Oya National Park

Gal Oya is one of Sri Lanka's best-preserved and least-visited national parks. It was founded in 1954 largely to safeguard the catchment region of the huge Senanayake Samudra Reservoir, Sri Lanka's largest inland body of water. Gal Oya is 25,000 hectares of lush evergreen forest, mountains, savannah, and lake that is rich in bio variety and aquatic life. This morning, we'll get up early for breakfast before heading out on a boat safari, which is the greatest way to explore Gal Oya's rich wildlife, and if we're lucky, we might even see an Asian elephant swimming in its native habitat. We return to the hotel for lunch and a quick change of clothes before our afternoon jeep safari.

Day 6:

Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe's Gal Oya. We go to Udawalawe this morning and check into our accommodation before our afternoon jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park. The park is well-known for its elephant population, which numbers over 400 and can be seen in herds of up to 50. In addition to elephants, we'll be looking for leopards, togue monkeys, grey langurs, wild pigs, and sambar. A variety of bird species, including the white-bellied sea eagle and the crested serpent eagle, can also be seen.

Day 7:

Yala National Park

Yala - Udawalawe. Today, we bid farewell to Gal Oya and travel to Yala National Park. After checking into our accommodation late in the morning, we go on an afternoon jeep safari in the park. Yala is Sri Lanka's second largest national park, with the highest number of leopards on the island. The park also has a big population of Asian elephants, sloth bears, golden palm civets, Sri Lankan kraits, and crocodiles, and leatherback and loggerhead sea turtles visit the park's shoreline.

Day 8:

Galle

Colombo - Yala. Today we return to Colombo, stopping in Galle to see the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Galle Fortress. The Portuguese built the castle in 1588, and the Dutch extended and strengthened it substantially during the 17th century. We arrived in Colombo late this afternoon and took a short tour of the city before enjoying our final group meal this evening.
